How does the future look like? How will we be mobile in a few years time? In many industrial countries a complete new mindset about mobility and transportation is evolving. The issues of climate protection, sustainability and liveable cities are increasingly moving into the focus. By 2030 less than one quarter of the Americans will own a car. Public transport, autonomous driving, car sharing and ride hailing will arise. In this context the concept “mobility as a service” will be the biggest revolution in transportation of the 21st century, which evolves from the mindset of using (vehicle) transportation without the cost of ownership. The main concept of MaaS is to put users at the center of transport services and offer them tailored mobility solutions based on their individual needs. By providing their citizens with clever tools and adding smart infrastructure, cities will gradually transform to smart cities. But what exactly is the difference between ‘Mobility as a Service’ and the way we are moving now?
This is how transport is working at present:
The users plan their trip and book every transportation options separately. Thus, they have to book and make extra purchases for the bus, the train, carsharing, Uber etc.
This is how transport is working with MaaS:
MaaS creates the prerequisites for a digital, seamless and connected mobility service. The users don’t have to bother about buying tickets with individual tariffs or tariff zones and also don’t have to purchase several tickets for all different kind of transport. They pay once and can use every possible transportation option to fluently get from A to B. This will save time and money.
The transport services provider will thus no longer exist in their “train”, “bus” or “taxi” bubble. They will work together with MaaS operators and negotiate pricing and payment options together. It is an integrative connecting link between the digitalization of the public transport and of sales, autonomous and connected driving and mobility data management. The end-to-end dovetailing of means of transport enables travelers to reach their destinations individually, comfortably and multimodally.
In about 5 years time, MaaS is predicted to be worth $1,76 trillion, which constitutes a quarter of the entire transportation. It will not only make it possible to switch to more environmentally friendly transportation, but also to achieve individual mobility beyond a private car.
HopOn, one of Enroutes most important mobility partners and a leading MaaS-App in Israel, is also smoothly creating the transition to MaaS. The seamless mobility and data collection solution for public and shared transport enables customers a hassle-free travel within urban networks. The HopOn app Rav Pass is an account-based mobile ticketing and navigation app which on the one hand supports all types of mass transit options like trams, metro, buses and trains and on the other hands also provides shared transportation services like bikes, scooters and shared shuttles. It’s cloud-based technology generates real-time data on passenger volumes and journeys enabling the analysis of trends and the optimization of services. The passengers can either buy a ticket in advance or use the Rav Kav Post-Paid option and buy for the trip afterwards. So why not just let them start their trip without having them to queue at the ticket machine, think about tariffs and city zones or decide beforehand which means of transport they want to use. They can just quickly jump on the train, relax and lie back – and finally do some shopping at their favorite store! And how cool would that be if you, on top of that, even get your ride for free?
